Constantinople was the greatest city of Christendom in the Middle Ages. Also known as Byzantium, it gave its name to the Byzantine Empire of which it was the capital. The Vikings knew it as Miklagard (the Great City), but the Byzantines just called it "I Polis" â€“ the City.
