Underground City In Turkey To Open for Tourism

Work has started to bring the eight-storey Çukurören Underground City, the largest underground city in the Central Anatolia region, into tourism. The underground city located within the borders of Gülpinar has a long history and was the largest underground city in the Cappadocia region.

Research has revealed that Çukurören was an eight-storey underground city. “It is said that ground waters pass through the third and fourth storey of the underground city. But we cannot see it because we haven't come to that point yet. We reached the second storey of the city. There is a church, a winepress, food stores, living spaces and wells on this level," said Aksaray's Gülpinar district Mayor Nizamettin Ugur said."Work has been carried out to reach lower levels.”

Ugur said work has restarted to clean out the underground city and bring it into tourism. Aksaray Provincial Council members have visited the city and expressed their admiration. “They think that the underground city will make great contribution to Aksaray's tourism.” When the eight-storey city opens, there will be a tourist rush to their district, Ugur said. He added that they expect support from officials to accelerate work in the underground city.
