Istanbul and Venice have become 'Sister City' with the protocol signed between Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Venice Metropolitan Municipality. Having travelled to Italy for "Venice Biennial", Kadir Topbas –Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality- had several meetings in Venice. Mayor Kadir Topbas gathered with Prof. Massimo Cacciari – Mayor of Venice Municipality – on June 8 on the occasion of signing ceremony for "Sister City" protocol between Istanbul and Venice.
Speaking in the ceremony, Kadir Topbas expressed his contentment for signing the protocol which was prepared to develop relations more between the two cities and contribute to the world peace by exchanging information and experience among the people of those cities.

Stating their aim as making Turkey a permanent participant in Venice Biennial, Kadir Topbas "with the signing of Sister City protocol, it would contribute to the increase of relations of art and culture between the two cities and two countries, and our permanent participation status. With this protocol, we have decided especially to preserve culture, art and cultural heritage and to promote and develop tourism.

This protocol has taken Venice Biennial and Istanbul Biennial to a more meaningful level for both cities" he said.

The Cultural Cooperation Protocol was signed in 1993 with the city of Venice, which contributed significantly to the universal development of culture and art for centuries. Upon signing of "Sister City" protocol, both parties will endeavour in preserving culture, art and cultural heritage and in development and promotion of tourism, besides exchanging information and experience on the fields of local governance, urban planning, public transportation, health, youth, sports, environmental protection and development. There will be opportunities of promotion provided in the programs like fairs, exhibitions and festivals in the fields of trade, investment, finance, culture and tourism; and they will be putting their best efforts to cooperate by supporting each other in international platforms.
